Down the Flemington straight over 1000m. Plenty of speedy types engaged here which should make for a very exciting race.
1 DUPORTH Peter G Moody Steven Arnold (8) 58.5
2 CANNONBALL (USA) Wesley Ward Patrick Valenzuela (7) 58.5
3 NICCONI David Hayes Damien Oliver (13) 58.5
4 BURDEKIN BLUES Barry Baldwin Shane Scriven (10) 58.5
5 SEEKING ATTENTION Anthony Cummings Tim Clark (4) 56.5
6 STARSPANGLEDBANNER Leon Corstens Danny Nikolic (5) 55
7 SHELLSCRAPE Chris Waller Corey Brown (6) 55
8 WANTED Peter G Moody Brad Rawiller (1) 55
9 GOVERNANCE Peter Snowden Kerrin McEvoy (12) 55
10 HONEST TRUTH (NZ) John P Thompson Peter Robl (3) 55
11 HEADWAY Peter G Moody Luke Nolen (11) 53
12 IRISH LIGHTS David Hayes Glen Boss (2) 53
13 SISTER MADLY Anthony Cummings Craig Williams (9) 53
Early favourite is STARSPANGLEDBANNER at $4.60 and is has firmed from $5.50. Others in the market are BURDEKIN BLUES ($5), IRISH LIGHTS ($6) and NICCONI ($6). Some good value with other runners with this being a most open race in my view. |

I agree it's a super competitive race so I'd be inclined to go for value runners. The Moody runners of Headway $9, Wanted $13 and Duporth $18 appeal to me as does Shellscrape who is most underated and is a $10 chance.
STARSPANGLEDBANNER must have been tearing up the training track this time in because I don't warrant his form as a Caulfield Guineas winner of 1600m being good enough to be a pronounced favourite against open sprinters over 1000m !! Big unders for mine but time will tell.
I'll likely go Headway or Shellscrape at the each way price.

Irish Lights will win this one with her light weight and ability to sprint well fresh. Nicconi is a big threat so look for the Hayes Exacta. I am very interested to see how Cannonball goes and I couldn't resist a small wager at the big odds on offer.
Cheers,

i'm very interested to see this race it's very open and will be a cracker. I am however goin to be backin burdikin although he doesn't have a real turn of foot he has an amazing cruizing speed which he can sustain for a long period and will run these off there feet i hope.

How many weeks to go in the tipping challenge boss?
If it isn't many, then I might write this season off and go rough -
Anyone for Cannonball?

I might be mad but I'm going wide as well Mex. I give Sister Madly a chance.
Going the quinella Burdkin Blues & Sister Madly for the value the others may well win but no real value.

Sister Madly is out jibba - now also Irish Lights so the bottom weight Headway has to be a good chance.
I'm gonna take a box Tri with Headway, Burdekin Blues, Cannonball and Nicconi - and watch Starspangledbanner stuff me up

Disappointing decision by Coolmore to scratch Irish Lights after their purchase of Starspangledbanner, understandably a business decision to try and boost the colt's value but it obviously shows how highly they think of the filly. That $9 was loking very nice indeed x $100 in my account

I found it hard to settle on one so I just layed Starspangledbanner which ended up being the right move. Great win by Nicconi, that win looked a bit like the All Silent win in the Spring !!! |

I backed my 2 tips of Irish Lights (money back after scratching) and Nicconi so I ended up on top in this one, missed the race due to work so can't wait to catch the replay
I must say it was very satisfying to see Starspangledbanner get beaten today which really makes the Coolmore decision look all the more foolish

As Ken Callander correctly pointed out in today's Telegraph, "if Starspangledbanner was bought by Coolmore for $10 Million, what are Denman and So You Think worth ?? "
Very nice win by Nicconi. Those final sectionals were brilliant.

Australia certainly has some great depth in the sprinting ranks at the moment. Nicconi looks set to go to Royal Ascot but they could send 5 or 6 over there and they would all likely finish in the first half of the field. Not sure our stayers have the same depth of quality.
